Moroccan government has decided to suspend in a definitive way the import of solid waste from the exterior after the polemic unveiled these past weeks for the import of 2.500 tons of residues from Italy.

“The Government decided to suspend all import operation of wastes from exterior”, announced today the minister of Communication and first speaker of the government, Mustafa Jalfi, in the press conference after the government council.

Jalfi remarked that is also suspended the use of the actual wastes imported from Italy, that it was meant to incinerate in the country cement factory, until investigations are finalized on that matter.

The Import of 2.500 tons of wastes from Italy arose in the last weeks a polemic that has growth like a snowball in the social networks and sparked the indignation of the ONG in defense of the environment, and of some political parties that filed an sue against the government.

Moroccan web users make a number of hash tags to complain that  “Morocco isn’t Europe’s wasteland” and criticize the import of this waste that, according to them, goes against the environmental politics of the country in the matter of prohibit the production and commercialization of plastic bags, and with the hopes of the Climatic Summit (COP22) that Morocco will host next November.

The Moroccan Ministry of the Environment, Hakima Haite, said recently that his country imports a 450.000 tons of non-dangerous solid residues a year to cover his energy needs, and added that the operation is made according to the convention of Basel that controls the border movements of hazardous wastes and their treatment.
