The US inland transport industry is facing a nationwide shortage of trucks. According to executives and intermediaries, who work closely with domestic transportation companies, the cost has increased between 25% to 30% in comparison to last year.
The severe weather conditions experienced during this past winter caused major delays in train transport, which catapulted congestion at terminals in the Midwest and Southeast. Subsequently, drivers faced waiting time, resulting in additional fees between $ 75-150 per hour to recover lost productivity at rail yards.
Faced with these challenges, maritime transporters have responded with a combination of actions that consist of emergency surcharges, increased rates and suspension of deliveries to door in warehouses.
This national phenomenon has escalated to Washington and, as part of the solution to the crisis facing the country today, lawmakers Duncan Hunter and Trey Hollingsworth have developed the bill that proposes to eliminate the federal rule that prohibits young people from 18 and 21 years of age to drive 18-wheeled vehicles to transport freight of goods out of the state in which they are licensed. This in order to allow young people to cross the state border driving this type of vehicles and thus, increase the supply of truck drivers in the country, reducing the level of scarcity that is presenting and that is having considerable repercussions in the current economy.
